ISC Capacity Building Areas

 Action Areas (Sion Education Project)

After visiting the Education Support Project in Sion, I identified areas where immediate intervention would be necessary such as infrastructure improvement, updating MIS system etc. As I was discussing these points with Ms. Shibani Sachdev (CEO) of United Way Mumbai, she recommended that the exercise would be even more effective if I could project the cost ISC would have to incur, if it were to go ahead with my advice. I have also tried to list the outputs that can be expected if the NGO decides to invest in the areas identified by me.

     Volunteer Recommendations

Firstly, ISC needs to start the process of storing information electronically. The computer was donated through United Way for this purpose. The agency has been unable to use the computer for the project. When I was discussing problems faced in programme implementation with the project coordinator; maintenance costs seemed to be a big problem for her. My suggestion is that ISC can list these expenses-computer repair and up-gradation as funding requirements in their proposal for improving internal capacity.

    Improve Infrastructure in Joglekarwadi Office

Cabinets and filing systems are required for efficient Office management, so is a standing board to be used for workshops.

Information to parents and children can be expedited in a better manner if notice boards are used to communicate information.

Information Management Systems need to be Put in Place

Since sponsorship form does not register addresses of sponsored children, verifications on credibility of information is impossible.

Accounting for project expenses is difficult.

    Enhance Nutrition Supplement Programme

Enhance budget for nutrition. Currently, ISC is able to spend only Rs.1 twice on each child every week.

Full nutrition can be provided for each child for as low as Rs.5. It requires networking with Ratnagiri Trust.

    Revise Staff Salaries

Staff salaries are not in sync with present city living requirements.

Turnover is high because coordinators look at the ISC position as a stop-gap arrangement.
