The Psychoanalytic Therapy and Research Centre (PTRC) founded in 1974, is an NGO working to create awareness about mental health and to provide the necessary treatment to emotionally deprived and disturbed children, adults and their families. The PTRC offers affordable treatment at two clinics in the city, where a core group of psychotherapists, who are also trained by the PTRC, offer therapeutic services. As for most Indians, the pressures of survival take precedence over meeting the emotional and mental health needs of Mumbai’s millions. Care and therapy for people with emotional difficulties are woefully inadequate. Moreover, the lack of awareness and the social stigma attached to mental illness stops people from seeking access to appropriate treatment.
