Health, Education, Livelihood and Emergencies:

Health and Sanitation -- Health check-up and awareness camps

Encouraging good sanitation habits

  • Formation Mothers committee
  • Training on low cost nutritional diets
  • Detailed study on health situation in the area and developing community based sustained health management system in the area.
  • Linkage with immunization drives and policy advocacy for area specific health drive
  • Creating good environment for Safe motherhood

    • Special drive for Adolescent and youth education on Reproductive and Child Health
    • Trained and educated birth attendants with basic tools
    • Special emphasis is given on Home Management of Diarrhoea, mothers and families are continuously trained by project staffs, ANM to adopt appropriate practices for correct case management at home and timely referral.
    • Promoting delayed marriages of girls not earlier than age of 18

  • Conducting Health-check Up of all enrolled children and their siblings to identify the current health status of the children
  • Completion of Post check-up cnical investigations for selected children to confirm whether they are suffering from chronic, serious illness or not—linkage of children suffering from serious or chronic health problems with government health facilities for follow up and treatment—proving necessary additional support for medicines from the project to ensure complete recovery
  • Identification of the immunization status of all 0-5 children in the target community, organize mother’s meeting on child immunization, linkage with government health services for ensuring regular immunization of all 0-5 years children
  • Identification of all pregnant mothers in the target community and their ANC status, organize monthly meetings with the pregnant women for motivating them for taking all ANC services, linkage with government hospital for ensuring ANC services to all pregnant women
  • Organize awareness programs in the community on personal hygiene and sanitation to sensitize people on these important issues
  • Organize awareness program in the community on HIV/AIDS
  • Conduct Monthly Meeting of the Area Committees, Project Implementation Committee and Project Finance Committee to ensure community participation in program planning, implementation and supervision and to encourage community ownership and partnership
  • Completion of study on health hazards involved in making bangles in household units and low-cost technological modification in the units, in collaboration with Center for Development of Glass Industries
  • Initiation of low cost technological modifications in selected household units, as per the recommendations made by the expert team
  • Organize Training for the Project Implementation Committee and all area committee members
  • Perspective building workshops on ‘Disability’ and ‘Reproductive and Child Health’—2 workshops on each subject
  • Staff training on Community Based Rehabilitation for disabled persons (14 days, including 7 days field training)
  • Situational Analysis in the area of RCH, disability census and community sensitization on disability.
  • Nutrition— Growth Monitoring of all 0-5 children in the enrolled families and counseling of mothers on child nutrition through project ECD center
  • Support for supplementary nutrition to the selected children suffering from tuberculosis and other serious life-threatening diseases

    1. A concerted effort to bring about appropriate behavioral changes among the mothers through existing programmes such as Integrated Child Development Services(ICDS) , Safe motherhood , Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA).
    2. Encouraging small family norms and adequate spacing through intensive family welfare and motivational measures so that availability of food is sufficient.
    3. Creation of conducive environment of providing safe drinking water , clean environment, immunization services, health care etc.
    4. Antenatal and post-natal care to women for preventing low birth weight babies will be provided.
    5. Ensuring better nutritional coverage of expectant mothers right from the Ist trimester to the major period of lactation.

  • ECD-- Disha Children’s Program is operating three ECD Centers in the community which caters to 40 children in the age group of (3-6 years) in each center. These centers are operated in the areas where no government ECD facility is available. A total of 120 children have been benefited from the ECD centres so far. These centers foster holistic development and adopts innovative teaching strategies to suit the age group. It includes all aspects of development–physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional.
  • Sensitization of the primary caregivers on child caring and rearing practices including different types of food, amounts and frequency of feeding and the importance of proper feeding practices. Intervention in the areas of providing supplementary nutrition for children and expectant mothers through Integrated Child Development Schemes (ICDS) and day care center. Strengthening the functioning of ICDS
  • programs and creation of linkages with CCF Balwadi centers.
  • Giving awareness and training for adolescent girls and women regarding the nutritional requirement of different age group, simple ways of preparing low-cost nutritious food.
  • Build on the existing skills and abilities of parents and families to ensure appropriate care within homes and communities.
  • Continuation of three old ECD centers and opening of 4 new ECD centers within the target community—with 40 children in the age group of 3-6 years in each ECD center—purchase of teaching learning materials for all project ECD Centers—Construction of 2 ECD centers on the space provided by the project
  • Basic Education-- Organize School Chalo Abhiyan to identify non school going children and admitting them in nearby schools.
  • Continuation of old three Non Formal Education Centers, purchase education supplies and teaching learning materials & materials for creative arts for all NFE centers
  • Providing educational supplies to very needy enrolled children and siblings, attending formal schools
  • Observation of the Independence Day on 15th August through children’s programs and cultural activities
  • Partial reimbursement of school fees for very needy school going children
  • Establishment of 1 Adolescent Resource Center in the community to take care of the developmental needs of the adolescents
  • Development of classroom infrastructure in a Government Aided school in the community
  • Organize awareness programs in the community on child labor and unsociability issues for community sensitization and mobilization of public opinion against child labor and untouchability
  • Creation of Technical Support Structure on ECD and Basic Education for qualitative improvement and effective functioning of
    all ECD and Basic Education Programs
  • Formation of 2 Children’s Clubs to enhance child participation and organize training of the children’s club members
  • Micro Enterprize Devbelopment-- Facilitation support to existing SHGs and formation of new SHG/CIG
  • Formation of project level federation/MBT of the SHG/CIG
  • Develop loan disbursement and recovery mechanism and initiation of loaning to selected families for starting income generation activities
  • Capacity building of the SHG, CIG and MBT members through organizing training programs
  • Capacity building of project team on LEEP and Loan management
  • Community Participation-- The project formed area committees (slum development committees) in each of the eight slums and also in the scavenger’s community. Each of these committees has 10-20 members, and the members were selected after detailed discussion with the entire community, and sharing the concept, roles and duties of the area committees. These committees will serve as the main community based forums for the project and each committee will be involved in identification/prioritization of needs, make need based plans, ensure quality implementations of all programs in the community and supervise the ongoing activities of the project. Community participation will be enhanced in project planning and implementation through these committees, and there will be community ownership towards project activities.
  • One member from each of these area committees was selected for the project level Implementation Committee, and one more member from each committee was selected for Project Finance Committee. Regular meetings of the Project Implementation Committee and Project Finance Committee will be organized from July onwards.

Formation of Area Committees, Project Implementation Committee, Project Finance Committee, Children's Clubs and Women's self help groups for involving them in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of the project activities and create community partnership and ownership.
