Organizational Overview

Akshara Foundation is a charitable trust with the mission to ensure that every child is in school and is learning well and is operating in municipal schools and communities in Bangalore.

Program Description
Preschool (Balwadi) Programme
Akshara Foundation has set up hundreds of balwadis (preschools), for 4-6 year olds, in many communities across the State. In some cases, Akshara has trained young women to become “edupreneurs” and have helped them to start their own preschools by providing training and teaching learning material. Since the programme was initiated in 2001 it has benefited 52,000 children.
Accelerated programme for Learning
Akshara Foundation's Accelerated Programmes for Learning teach children reading and math through short, intensive remedial interventions that are aimed to address children who are in-school but not learning well. Since initiation in 2003, the programme has covered 17,000 children over the age of 7 and has impacted 10,000.
Learning Programme
Akshara Foundation has a network of libraries in schools and communities to encourage and sustain a reading habit among children. The libraries open up children's minds to worlds beyond their own and are a key factor in facilitating the learning process.
Karnataka Learning Programme
The Karnataka Learning Partnership is a unique partnership between the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Akshara Foundation and has been set up to improve learning outcomes among primary school children in government schools in Karnataka.
Karnataka Catalytic Programme
The Karnataka Catalytic Programme aims to improve the quality and quantity of primary education in rural and semi-urban across Karnataka through a series of initiatives in partnership with other NGOs

Case Study
Suhas, 7 years

Suha a student studying in Std 2 says “reading is one of my passions. I was introduced to reading as a fun activity by my sister Sowmya. My parents Mr. Nagraj and Mrs. Nagamani encourage both my sister and me to borrow books from the Akshara library. I have borrowed over 30 books over the last four months. My favourite is the Read India book “MURIDA REKKE.I is so happy Akshara is setting up libraries everywhere .”

From Suhas story, it can be seen how Aksharas work is opening children's minds and making reading a fun activity.
