Profile of the project site:

Aarambh would like to extend its activities to another slum community in Navi Mumbai. Aarambh has conducted a need identification survey in Sharamik Nagar slum colony. The following problem areas have been identified post the survey

Sharamik Nagar on the Thane – Belapur road is a large slum colony. Most of the residents are migrants from nearby states. There are about 700 families residing in the area and 60% of population works on construction sites in the area. Others are employed on daily wage basis in the wholesale markets. This area has no school or hospital facilities and people have to travel more than 2 km to reach the nearest Primary Health Centre. The area has a large number of TB cases due to poor nutrition and hygiene conditions

Some of the major problem areas of Sharamik Nagar are:

  • High number of children out of school since there is no school in the area
  • Nearest government hospital is about 2 km away
  • The area has no toilet or drinking water facilities
  • Most children suffer from Malaria, stomach infections and anemia
  • People earn about Rs60 to 70 per day. But in the rainy season when there is no construction activity they struggle very hard to make a living
  • There are about 40 children of 10 to 14 years who go to work to supplement family income
  • More than 100 children below the age of 8 have never been to any school as the only government school is very far away
  • 200 children have left school after a year or two of being enrolled
  • More than 40% of children in the 0 to 3 years group are not immunized as the government facilities are not regular
  • Women work on construction sites or as domestic maids and lack of proper food and health services made them weak and prone to sicknesses.
