Case Study

In an Indian metropolis, vegetables are usually bought and sold more on the streets than in super markets. Selling vegetables is generally a man's business, but a substantial number of women take this up to make a living.

Mamta

Mamta and her husband are landless and came to Delhi in search of a livelihood. They were in desperate situation, as her husband had no job. Mamta's sister helped them put up a roadside vegetable shop. She did not have any accounting skills and this enterprise was not doing well at all. At this point, VIDYA, stepped in giving her a 1st loan of Rs 2000. The group also helped her with arithmetic and accounting and soon she was earning enough to put away some of her earnings.

After paying back the first loan, she took a 2 nd loan of Rs3000, added her savings, and bought a cart. This helps her sell extra vegetables, and she avoids vegetables getting spoilt and the resultant loss. VIDYA has awakened her faith in herself and she now feels capable of newer challenges.

Her income, has given her a sense of self- worth as an individual. She has greater say in family matters and she is now confident that she has a hand in shaping her destiny.
