Akshay is a 6 year old boy with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Sensory Integration Dysfunction. He used to throw chairs & put large pebbles in his mouth. He needed to manipulate the environment by touching and talking to people without eye contact.
He was obsessed with any kind of reading matter and would attempt to grab it. Compliance and patience were low and he often screamed, hit other children, grabbed and reached out for the object he wanted.
After receiving Occupational and Montessori therapy his mouthing of sand has been ruled out in school. Special focus on addressing his sensory integration needs of mouthing and touching has helped considerably and the incidence of chewing of paper, tugging his collar in his mouth and trying to eat stones is almost halved.
With a better sense of balance and control, he can now walk up and down the stairs using alternative feet without support while carrying objects in both hands. This has also facilitated his overall learning of many other activities of daily living. |
