Dr. Vibha Krishnamurthy is the Founder and Medical Director of Ummeed. After her post-graduation in paediatrics from Delhi she moved to the US where she trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University and Children's Hospital, Boston. The idea of Ummeed was born while she was working at Children's Hospital as a Developmental Paediatrician. The resources available at the hospital and community in Boston brought home to her the paucity of facilities available for children with developmental disabilities in India. She relocated to India in 1998.
On her return, she worked with a number of non-profit organizations as well as Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, while she reflected on how best to provide the range of specialized services required for children with special needs. She also maintains that identifying and treating disabilities in children also makes for a healthier society at large in the long run.
On November 5, 2001, helped by her husband, Ashish Karamchandani, a partner of the Monitor Group (a leading global management consultancy firm), she founded Ummeed with an initial staff of three.
Today Ummeed provides specialized care for most developmental disabilities and has additionally moved into areas of training, research and advocacy. Almost 50 professionals ranging from paediatricians to therapists to mental health professionals and social workers support its services. It is now one of the country's leading NGOs, much respected for its work in the field of children with disabilities.
Dear Friends, Family, Colleagues,
Marathons have a rather canny way of bringing about change in more ways than one. It unites those with a common passion, it opens up avenues for those attempting it for the first time, and it works as a melting pot for those just looking to make new friends, but what it more importantly does, is raising awareness for myriad social causes that often need grave attention.
Participating in the marathon, opened my eyes and allowed me to look beyond the fun and frolic. It gave me an opportunity to see and appreciate the things we have and offer and lend support to various social causes such as, children with special needs.

Owing to the worldwide economic scenario, it has becoming difficult for NGO's such as Ummeed Child Development Centre to sustain themselves from economic pressures. Few of us would have seen tough times in last few years with what the macroeconomic changes have done to our personal and professional lives, but we still have something to look forward to, unlike the NGO's, who's only source of income is usually via donations.
I would hence request you to support me and my cause, to help Ummeed Child Development Centre reach their goals.
You can pledge/donate as much as Rs.100,000 or as little as Rs.100. Consider donating any amount which you would have otherwise spent on a Movie, Lunch/Dinner, Shopping, Weekend holiday or Electronic Gadget etc. I have taken the lead and donated Rs.5,100/-
You could also request your company to support us by donating and joining the cause, this would be considered as a CSR activity and would be eligible for 80G tax exemption. All donations above Rs 100 are eligible for 80G tax exemption for invdividual donors.
