CHILDLINE 1098 is a 24 hour free, emergency, national phone outreach service for children in distress. Any child or a concerned adult can dial 1098 and report a problem or requirement for redress.
The 1098 service is accessed mostly by disadvantaged children calling for resolution to a variety of issues – abuse, child labour, serious illnesses, child marriage, separation from home, abandonment, abduction, addictions, disabilities, bullying, lack of opportunities / resources for schooling and accessories, and quite often simply the absence of anyone to relate to.
The Childline service responds to these calls through a network of local partner organizations, working in the child rights segment, capacitated to intervene and ensure that children whose rights are abused are given adequate solutions. The services are currently available in 279 cities. Plans are afoot for expansion of the program to all the districts of the country numbering about 616, in due course.
I am inspired by Childline- a passionately run NGO dedicated to ensuring childrights at a national level. The fact that the emergency services are available in 279 cities across the country gives me confidence that Childline will be able to deliver effective services to the last mile. This will also, I am sure, will motivate others to pitch in and support this worthy cause.
