Indian Cancer Society, a Public Charitable Trust founded in 1951 is India's oldest National Anti Cancer Organisation dedicated to the fight against cancer through its numerous country wide activities. ICS strongly believes in the well-established premise that "Cancer is curable if detected early". It has a wide range of initiatives for increasing awareness about and helping detect cancer. For a majority of people affected by it, cancer continues to be a terminal disease and the most effective way of battling it is early detection. ICS has several state of the art Mobile Vans and Cancer Detection Clinics and organized regular detection camps all over the country. They also have a full-time centre in Mumbai which offers cancer screening facilities at a very nominal charge.
My father had always maintained a very healthy lifestyle – vegetarian, non-smoking and regular yoga. So, we were all shocked when he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2010. His condition worsened very quickly and despite care at some of the best hospitals and access to advanced medicine, he passed away in 2012.
While my family continues to struggle with grief and we try to make sense of our loss, I very soon realized that prostate cancer was something that, if detected early, would have been easily treatable. In fact, for many forms of cancer, early detection is the only way to manage the disease.
As a society, we continue to underestimate the prevalence of cancer – if cancer detection could become wider, it would help save many lives. Indian Cancer Society does excellent work in this sphere and I strongly urge you to help them in their mission to widen the coverage of cancer awareness and detection efforts.
