Population is not issue of numbers alone; it is an issue of gender inequalities and unequal social development. Wherever the gender and social development indicators are poor we find that the fertility, child and maternal mortality rates are high because women have low literacy, marry early and produce children when they are still in their teens. They face violence and are not able to exercise their rights and enjoy their entitlements. Repeated pregnancies, sex selective abortions and violence against women are a result of the low status of women in society. Population First is an organization which is addressing these issues through two of its programmes – Laadli Girl Child Campaign and AMCHI field based rural intervention using very innovative strategies. I am supporting Population First because we cannot aspire to be an economic super power if we continue to neglect 49% of our population – women of India
I am a cherished daughter 'LaadlI' of my family. How many girls you think are so lucky?
Every day in India 1600 girls are eliminated in the womb just because they are girls. These are not random acts but reflect the deep seated prejudice against girls across social strata. The tragedy is we are still in denial mode. We need to acknowledge the problem, take responsibility and commit ourselves to bring in gender equality if we want a better future for our children.
We at Population First through our two initiatives Laadli and Amchi influence the influencers – media, advertising and youth to change the way India treats its women. We open up channels of communication, engage in dialogue, and build commitment of people to be the change makers. Today we find more ads showing daughters in a positive light, TV soaps focusing on social issues and media campaigns on gender issues.
Please support me by joining me in making the change happen.
